As you would expect, the summer is always a busy time on the construction site and this year has been no exception. This large second floor fit-out for Southampton Solent University in the High Street shows just how much has been accomplished in a very short space of time. These before and after photos show what a mammoth task it has been to stay on schedule. The results are stunning and one can hardly believe that the old gutted interior is now such a contemporary facility.

Another project steaming along on schedule is Merlin Quay in Southampton. In a previous post all we had to show was an architects impression. Today, in excellent summer sunshine, this new development cuts a fine new profile into the waterside landscape. Although it is still some way from completion the interior and exterior are packed with contemporary design features. The next time photos are taken this project will be complete.

Our third site in Southampton, the New Bittern Park School Sixth Form Block is still “under wraps” but progress is good. This is also a massive project with tight time frames but within a few weeks the “wrapping” will be off and photos will reveal a stunning new building ……watch this space. The architects impression below show the intended finish.

This major refurbishment is in its final stages and formed part of P21 Contract

To say that the closing months of 2010 were tough for the construction industry is somewhat of an understatement. On our return from the Christmas break however, we hit the road running with enquiries coming in at an above average rate for a January. The current trend has not stopped and our estimating system is operating at full capacity. This has been wonderful after the previous years erratic enquiry levels. So far the values of the enquiries are also substantially higher than those of 2010 and the nature of the contracts appear to be “meatier”.
The ideal for every business is to maintain a steady flow of work and a nice balance between live projects, pending projects and projects being tendered. In the real world however, this is never really ever achieved with the more likely scenario being one of famine or feast.
The first half of 2011 has certainly found VCD Electrical in the feast section of the trend. This however does not mean that as a company we are complacent because by the end of June, when historically enquiry levels slow, we will once again be wanting to lining up work which must carry us through the winter and into 2012.
VCD Electrical are entering the summer season with a healthy order book and the hope that this trend continues for the construction industry as a whole. Thanks to all the estimators who are always ready to take our calls; it is always good to have a quick chat and to share information. Last year we were able to pass on a number of great leads to the companies who regularly send us enquiries. In a “grab all you can take world” we still believe that relationships are important and we are therefore always glad to pass on leads and information and in so doing add value to our calls.
